CALL FOR PAPERS for: 16th International Symposium on "Remote Sensing and Spatial Information"

GORS Planetarium

GORS activities in the astronomical domain :
GORS established an office for astronomical studies, its tasks:
- to follow up the astronomical achievements and observations,
- to prepare plans and periodical reports
- to exchange astronomical data with the local, Arab and foreign related organizations and universities
-
GORS make efforts to construct a planetarium and observatory at GORS headquarter. This observatory will be considered as one of the international telescopes network consists of small or medium telescopes. The observatory will be invested through the mutual scientific cooperation with the national, regional and international astronomical institutions,The tasks of the observatory and planetarium are the following:
to executing observatory investigations and astronomical researches carried out by the Syrian and non Syrian specialists.
- to disseminate astronomical and space science knowledge
- to train school and university students in astronomical and cosmological physics domains
- to support and improve the astronomy education programs and methodologies in the universities and the basic education school students
- to provide the society with astronomical information aiming to connect the society with the scientific bodies.
- to contribute in the cosmological scientific researches
- to develop the scientific tourism in Syria

Exhibition of Planetarium competition :
GORS had announced a call for a competition for choosing the best planetarium design. Two committees were formed for this purpose:
A supervising committee. to make sure if the participated designs meet the required conditions.
An arbitration committee to compare the designs and choose the best convenient design. Experts from Syria , Lebanon and France joined this committee.
An exhibition of participated planetarium designs was organized at GORS headquarter . twenty one selected models participated in this exhibition which was inaugurated by Dr. Mouhammad Basheir Al Munjed; Minister of Communication and Technology. In his open statement, he explains the importance of remote sensing and its role in the progress of other sciences due to the wide range of remote sensing applicationa and he briefly indicated the status of technology in Syria. As well as Dr. Mohammad Rukieh; General Director of Remote Sensing made a statement, he explained the remote sensing application to various fields; economy, education, environment and astronomy. DR. Rukieh pointed out that all these reasons urged GORS to establish a planetarium since this will help very much in conducting the astronomical studies.
Dr. Rukieh described the planetarium design ; it consists of hemispheric domed theater that represents the real planetarium at any day or time; in the past, in the present and in the future, as well as the different spatial objects are exposed, and could be studied in a methodological way, such as the movement of the planets, stars, the moons, comets, meteors, cluster of stars and galaxies, in addition to the history of the universe and the history of the solar system. The planetarium performance is controlled by special systems and software. This project was organized in coordination with the Ministry of High Education, the Syrian Cosmological Society and the Syndicate of Syrian Engineers. committee, the arbitration committee selected three winning designs :
- The prize of the first winning design was 1 million Syrian Pound went fifty-fifty to the engineers; F. al Bukhary and B. Batha from Syria.
- The prize of the second winning design was 800000 Syrian Pound went to the engineers; N.Kubaisy and A. Esslan from Lebanon
- The prize of third winning design was 600000 Syrian Pound went to the engineers M. J.khai Alla, M. M. Al Ruz and R.M. Al Barid.
Consolation prizes of 200000 Syrian Pounds offered to the forth and to the fifth winning designs. Besides, encouragement prizes of 500000 Syrian Pounds were offered. overall morale prizes offered to the representatives of Syria, Egypt, Emirates and Libya.
